Graduation season is upon us. Bands are tuning up their Pomp and Circumstance. Diplomas are being printed and signed.
Today, it is not uncommon for our children to experience a preschool, kindergarten, 6th grade, middle school and high school graduation – not to mention commencement ceremonies for anything they do after high school. Every school is a little different, but we definitely celebrate more milestones along the way than we ever have before.
Something about that is okay with me – it is nice to cheer for knowledge gained and advancement earned. It’s nice for our kids to know we are proud of them for achieving this next feat and to encourage them to keep going.
It doesn’t stop when we’re 18 or 28 or 68. If we are living, we are learning. Sometimes it is planned and sometimes it is thrust upon us – good, bad or otherwise.
As you know, for anyone who wants to be an over-the-road driver, training is readily available and jobs are plentiful. Companies offer free training – typically a few weeks in class, followed by a few weeks with a trainer on the road. Achieving a CDL opens many doors and (of course!) many roads, too.
Like any industry, the opportunities don’t stop there. You can learn to be an advanced tractor trailer operator – focusing on advanced safety, DOT and all-terrain conditions.
You can get endorsements to include topics like: air brakes, combinations and hazardous materials.
You can take a refresher course if you have been out of the industry for a while.
You can advance to be an instructor, trainer or mentor.
And it all matters. It all should be celebrated.
The work you do makes all other work possible. We should have a slice of cake and throw up a mortar board every once in a while in honor of the continued advancement of you and our industry.
Henry Ford once said, ““Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young.”
Cheers to staying young in spirit, while growing old in wisdom. What do you do to keep learning?
As always, I look forward to hearing what you think of this article and what else you would like to see in this spot.
Take care of yourself and drive home safely,
