Celadon Trucking has officially begun the process of refreshing our fleet with brand new trucks!
The first few 2020 Peterbilt 579s are rolling in, and Celadon will be assigning them out to the drivers who have been here the longest. One of the first drivers to receive a new truck is Harvey P., a 27-year veteran of Celadon.
We got the chance to sit down with Harvey last week to learn a little bit about him as he was getting his new truck prepped. Get to know him below!
As soon as we found out Harvey started in 1991, we wondered what exactly was going on back in 1991. It doesn’t seem too long ago, does it?
We knew Harvey was special from the moment we started recruiting him.
Before he started at Celadon he told his recruiter, “If you give me the job, it will be the last one I ever have.”
We’re happy to say that he’s not only kept that promise, but he continually goes above and beyond as part of our team.
Being at a company for 27 years will give anyone the opportunity to see a lot, but Harvey has had the chance to grow his career while watching Celadon grow as well.
“They [Celadon] had 50 trucks and 200 trailers when I came to work here. There were ten to fifteen of us, and we would pick up our loads in Laredo and run all the way to Detroit together.”
Harvey knows that with his experience he could work almost anywhere, but he chooses to stay at Celadon. “They have always been there for me. Anything I have ever wanted or needed, and boom! Just like that, they would do it for me.”
Harvey has always liked driving a manual, but he is looking forward to making the most of the benefits of an automatic. “Well, I’m excited to see how it’s going to be driving an automatic, especially in traffic jams. I think that’s going to wind up being pretty nice.”
Some of Harvey’s favorite memories at Celadon are of he and his wife driving together as a team. “I liked driving with my wife [Nelda], she was an excellent driver. She would keep you on your toes.”
When asked if he would recommend Celadon, Harvey said, “In a heartbeat. That’s the best company out there, bar none.” Harvey’s family saw how much he enjoyed working at Celadon and eventually followed in his footsteps. At one time or another Harvey, Nelda (wife), Gabella (daughter), and Isabela (granddaughter) have all driven at Celadon.
Harvey has a work hard, play hard attitude that is truly appreciated at Celadon. “I get right at or a little over 3,000 miles a week. I usually go home once a month, but you can get home every other week [as an OTR or regional driver].” He takes advantage of the vacation package at Celadon as well. “We usually head to the lake because we like to be outside. I am always outside grilling for everybody too.”
Celadon cannot thank Harvey enough for almost three decades of hard work and dedication. He’s one of the best examples of what we look for in a driver at Celadon, and we can only hope for more team members like him. Congratulations and enjoy your new truck, Harvey!
